History of Grama Panchayat

Historical and Cultural Heritage

Tipu Sultan’s army passed through this route during their retreat to Mysore. It is believed that Tipu’s forces camped at Pallikkara in Nannammuck Panchayat for about a month. The Great Guru of Velayatt Kalarikkal was Tipu Sultan’s martial arts teacher, and it was here that Tipu mastered numerous techniques of Kalaripayattu. Legend has it that before leaving, Tipu paid his "Guru Dakshina" by purchasing land from the Kulapparambil family using gold coins.

The prestige of this Panchayat is further enhanced by Devaratnam Erkkara Namboothiripad, who was renowned for leading over a hundred Yagas. Additionally, Perumbilavu Kelumenon, a figure who studied under Changampilly Gurukkal and was known for robbing the wealthy to distribute riches to the poor, also lived in this region.

Land Reforms and Social Change

Historically, the vast majority of the land was held by a few Janmi (landlord) families, including the Manas of Pakaravoor, Erkkara, Azhvanchery, Kanjiyur, Pantavoor Mangalatheri, Punnampally, Muppally, and Viralipurathu. Under the leadership of the Karshaka Sangham (Peasants' Union), numerous struggles were organized for land rights. The Land Reforms Act eventually realized the long-held dreams of the common people, turning them into landowners and significantly altering social relations in the process.

Formation and Administration of the Panchayat

The Nannammuck Panchayat Board was initially established through a unique election where literate individuals raised their hands to vote. Mr. P.V. Manu (also known as Kotha) was the first President. Initially, Nannammuck was not part of the Malabar District Board, although several areas currently within its limits were under the District Board's jurisdiction. The original Panchayat boundaries consisted only of the Nannammuck region, while Pallikkara was part of the District Board.

On January 1, 1962, during the state-wide unification of Panchayats in Kerala, Nannammuck and Pallikkara were merged to form the current Nannammuck Panchayat. Following this unification, Mr. P.V. Manu was re-elected as President. In later years, an Inspector served as a Special Officer for a brief period. In the September 1964 elections, a new board was formed including:

  • K. Ayishakutti Teacher (President)

  • P.V. Lakshmanan

  • K.C. Ahmed

  • E.V. Haidru Haji

  • K. Raghavan

  • A.K. Muhammadkutty

  • P.P. Kunjappa

  • K.V. Chandru

Mrs. K. Ayishakutti Teacher became the first female Panchayat President in the Malappuram district.

Contributions and Development

The first President, P.V. Manu, donated land for the Panchayat office, the Ayurvedic hospital, and the Thariyath Health Centre. Ayishakutti Teacher, the first woman in the Panchayat to pass the SSLC, served as President for 10 years across two terms. During her tenure, one acre of land was purchased in Mukkuthala Kattuparambil and distributed among Harijan and general category families.
